Very interesting and well balanced article Adrian. I had my Bridgestone tires replaced after 200 km. by Goodyears, despite the additional costs I incurred. As I wrote in the thread I started, the tires are indeed a lottery, but sure make a difference.

The Macan 4 is satisfactory and the air suspension is indeed nice but not groundbreaking, despite the new technology. I would have opted for 20", if they weren't so ugly at the start of the configuration last year. Now there is more choice in this size.

I took delivery of my Macan Turbo with almost every conceivable option in November. I have been incredibly disappointed with the driving dynamics and handling. I thought something was wrong with my car or I was going mad but this review is spot on in describing the reality. I have another 18 months to run on my lease but will probably return the car and get a Taycan instead.

There are countless reviews out there, many of which feel superficial and come from YouTube influencers eager to please in exchange for the opportunity to review a car. There are also many conflicting opinions from so-called motoring journalists. Initially, the reviews were effusive at launch, but some raised concerns about the ride quality, only to change their stance after attending local drive events, and then revise their views again. Even Autocar is guilty of this inconsistency—just compare their initial review of the Macan with later updates. Part of the confusion seems to stem from the different variants and specifications of the test cars. Personally, I’d take all reviews with a grain of salt, given the limited time reviewers have with the cars.

This is my first Porsche, and spec’ing it was quite daunting—there’s a rabbit hole of options to consider. It took me almost a month to truly get used to the car, but now I absolutely love it. I find myself "driving" the car even on mundane commutes, rediscovering the joy of driving. My experience with the Macan 4 has been a positive one. I opted for the 20" base wheels, which have grown on me over time. While I would have preferred the 22" wheels, I compromised for the sake of comfort and reduced tyre noise. I also have the adaptive air suspension and rear-wheel steering, and I find the ride to be buttery smooth. There’s an inherent stiffness, but it's never uncomfortable. You do feel sharp ridges and potholes, but it’s never jarring.

The 22" wheels, while gorgeous, don’t handle broken road surfaces as well, and they can cause noticeable body movement. If you’re lucky enough to have smooth, unbroken roads, the 22" wheels should perform beautifully. The Macan 4 doesn’t exhibit the same nervous behavior as the Turbo or 4S models. Everything feels smooth and controlled, and while I completely understand the appeal of the faster variants, if you’re coming from high-performance cars, the Macan 4 might feel a bit slow off the line. The Turbo/4S were certainly tempting, but I didn’t think I had the experience to handle such fast cars just yet.

Overall, I think the review is fairly balanced and align with my own experience after test driving and living with the car.

I'm still of the view that I'll wait til next year - came close in the last few days where "incredible Porsche VIP offers were on the table for new Macan EVs" but they were somewhat lacklustre as was my own experience of driving the car. It should be much better than it is for price asked.

I'm sure many of the concerns will be addressed but it is not normal for Porsche to get this type of stuff wrong. The Taycan remains supreme in terms of handling, steering, suspension, rear axle steering, torque vectoring i.e. all the important stuff you buy a Porsche for.

The current MY Macan EVs are falling short of the mark on various fronts which is disappointing for those of us who are accustomed to the brand and expect so much more.

Does it matter? Sales are high but this will settle for sure and most people likely purchasing the car are new to the brand and can be easily influenced by the badge if nothing else.

personally, i still think comparing the Taycan to the Macan is false equivalency.
I think the Macan does things very well for a small SUV. It's not a sports car...
So i think you need to ask yourself, what type of vehicle do you really want?
cuz comparing the Macan to the Taycan is like comparing apples to tomatoes...Both are fruits, both are red.. .But in no way if you need one, can you replace it with the other

Unfortunately you are right. I drove a Taycan before and miss its agility and stickiness on the road. The seat height of the Macan, I had one before, was the most important reason for my choice.
But sometimes I really miss my Taycan. I’m mostly satisfied but still haven’t had the kick I got from the Taycan.

interesting - this is the exact opposite experience I have had coming from several Tesla performance models. I think the build quality and drive performance of my Turbo is stellar.

the article just seems like your typical author lookin for things to knock... the 0-60 was slower at 4%Soc...
why would anyone be racing the car at 4% charge? it's not a gas car where fuel adds weight.
and in the review of the EV, a "con" is there is no ICE version....

i came across this today where some of the negatives echoed my own experiences.

Rear Axle Steering (not a great implementation)

Range (same as i got from the Turbo over a long weekend 2.5 mi/kWh)

Interesting points on Macan 4.

A critics review will never be the same as a drivers review and this critic seemed to be searching under every stone for negatives most of which were subjective. Who would be pushing this car at 4% charge? Answer = Only someone desperate to find fault. I have a full spec. on my turbo plus 22 inch wheels(plus insulated glass etc. which my dealer said was a necessity as I was worried about noise) and in the environment in which I drive, the ride is smooth and it is the most silent car I have driven. Driving this is a dream….

Similar spec minus the insulated glass and I agree 100%. My ONLY issue is I cannot get my profiles to pair with my keys which is probably something I am doing wrong.

...one must certainly take also into consideration the Turbo the reviewer drove and criticised was a very sparsely spec'ed Macan given its price. So there're quite a lot missing from the car, things most of us think of as "certainly must have" and almost no one would have missed from our list in the configurator.

You cannot take this review seriously when someone uses summer tires on 22-inch wheels to make handling claims in 0C-5C weather. No system can overcome frozen summer compound tires in these conditions.

This reviewer did what I think is the worst video I've ever seen for an automotive publication. I genuinely thought he'd won a competition to do a car review. He seems mad nervous and he describes the M5 like he's describing unloading the dishwasher.
