yeah, i'm not sure why they don't close in cold temps to maintain the heat the battery generates... But at the same time, after charging in the cold, the battery temp has come up enough that the battery fan has come on... So it may not actually want the battery to be warm. idkSometimes I think that those flaps could be one of the reasons of the bad range in winter.
