Macan Turbo, 718 GTS
Country flag
Hi, let me introduce myself - I love small, nimble sport cars, and have mostly driven two dailies: A45 AMG and BWM Z4 G29, with some others in between. A45 was a brilliant car, but then it was time for me to move on and I have started to notice some flaws of it. New A45s is just not the same, as it was killed by plastics, electronics and GPF/OPF filters. After driving for such a long time mostly two liter, small, turbo cars I wanted something else. It seemed to me like a true, manual transmission, naturally aspirated sports car is the way to go. So I fell in love with 981 GT4, then 718 GT4 and lastly 718 GTS 4.0 that I hope I will get old with it. During all that time I hated electric cars so much, I could almost write about it online. And then life happened: I own solar power plant and electric daily seems like a logical way. So I test drove some electric cars including the Taycan. Oh boy, I was so wrong. So I got a really good deal for the Taycan GTS (2022) that I drive for almost a year now. During all that time I knew Macan is the "hatchback" I was looking for. So I was waiting for a Macan GTS to launch so I could spec it exactly as I want. And then again life happened to me, dealer called me sayin they have one of a kind deal (as the EV sales in my country are very low): Macan Turbo EV in Aventurine Green and truffle brown leather. I thought I am the only one but guess what: there is a whole topic with others owning similar configs out there, you lucky bastards!

About the spec
I fell in love with Avanturine green color previously on 718 - but I felt it matches brown leather better than the alcantara. And so the Turbo is a perfect match for it. I also have every exterior part possible painted in gloss black (I would not order it by myself), blue lights finish (they are more discrete than I thought, but I would not order it) and 22 inch wheels (I would go for the smallest possible wheels in turbonite color). Everyone loved the turbonite details. Truffle brown interior is out of this world, although after one month the leather is already creasing. Steering wheel is in alcantara, but for a daily I would prefer leather steering wheel, as keeping it clean is easier. I do not have a second display, and I am very happy about it. It is just pointless, and I always turned it off in Taycan to save some battery. I have the head up display, and I just hate it. It is so big I can not see the road sometimes, and it is super distracting for me. Porsche Innodrive? May be worth it, I personally do not use it as people drive like crazy in here and cruise control feels risky to me. Porsche designed center clock? Nice but totally worthless. The only option I highly suggest that you take Burmester audio system. I always thought car audio is nowhere near my audiphile gear at home, and during test drives I was left unimpressed by the Burmester and thought it is not worth it. After a month, and reading on this forum the speakers need to break in for quite a while to show the full power. This audio system is really superb, even for the asking prices and I highly suggest that you take it. Music in electric car really is a worth investment. Porsche electric sound? I love it, I know most of you don't but it is a small price to pay and you can always turn it off. It makes passengers feel the speed a little more natural.

About the car
ICE Macan was called the "hatchback" of Porsche, as it drives like a small nimble sports car. Macan EV feels even more like it. Honestly it is the best car I have ever owned in terms of performance and daily usability. It is silent, violently fast, nimble and comfortable on ANY road. Even though I have other cars, I can not wait to drive Macan Turbo. It works in the city, you can easily park and maneuver around. Highway trip? A breeze, as long as you can find the fast chargers on your way. Country roads? You just can not feel when you leave the city or the highway, suspension works like a dream even on stiff sport plus mode. What more can I say. The only real flaw that I found out, is that it is electric vehicle. You are bound to the charging network and all of its quirks. Real world range? ~400 kms, it is perfectly fine and much better than on the Taycan. If the car is specced with smaller wheels I really think the range could be better. Maybe even 4S or GTS tier would be better because you are tempted to use the Turbo power all of the time. Speed limit? 270 km/h in an SUV, that is just mindblowing, but also totally unnecessary - I could drive like that for 15 minutes and the battery was gone. There are no plastic sounds from the dashboard, there are no redundant buttons nor menus on any screen. Everything just works, and is design so that a child could use the car. The power output in normal mode is really good, I think all of the assists in the Macan are design so you can drive in flip flops or high heels and you are just fine. It drives just as well on snow, wet and sand, and you feel safe. Breaking is very good, although I feel like braking works much better with energy regen turned on. The break pedal feels more natural and works better than in the Taycan for everyday driving.

Taycan vs Macan
Taycan is a story for another topic, but let me focus on the differences.
Taycan was mainly build as an electric alternative to Panamera and 911 and it feels like a mix of both of them.
It is low car, and getting in and out is a little problematic. Dashboard also gets in your way when you get inside. Armrest and center console is just beneath your elbow, you have very little space to hold various items because its a true sports car and you should focus on the driving and minimize distractions. Whereas Macan's height is just right, you can get in easily even after hard day at the gym, but at the same time I have never got my pants dirty when getting out of it (as I do in other SUV). Inside you have lots of space and different seating position no matter the seats and the settings. You have LOTS of space for items: drinks, keys, remotes, phones etc. Central console is much better as you have more buttons in the Macan, and you can change the air conditioning or sound levels much quicker than with the Taycan's touch panels. When driving the first thing I have noticed is Macan is so nimble, and feels much smaller. Rear wheel steering is much more noticable and responsive in the Macan. Also Taycan always have the full power on, and in the Macan you need to push the kickdown button under the gas pedal to fully launch it. As for the modes Taycan has individual and power save modes - Macan only has the offroad mode which only works for rough terrain and shouldnt be used on the road. I missed the individual mode, and even though you can adjust the settings of Macan modes and save them, but this future never worked for me. I tried to deploy rear wing in Sport mode and it worked once, and then reset to default. Taycan had two energy regen modes: on and auto (which uses front camera) and Macan has only one. I really miss the auto mode, as it worked better. You can charge Taycan at home at 22 kW/h, and Macan only half of that - 11 kW/h. It really hurts, as Taycans battery takes ~3 hours time to fully charge, and Macans need 6 hours. I also got the free charger included in the Taycan, and for the Macan you have to buy one separately, ouch. The cabin is silent, I did not notice the difference between the two. Solar roof? I prefer Taycans dimming function, but also love that you can open the roof in the Macan.

To sum it all up:
Macan is currently the sweet spot, out of it all. It checks so many boxes for me: its spacious, its SUV for city/light terrain, its a very fast supercar, its good for little journeys and its excellent for short trips and everyday driving. Taycan is a little more crazy, sportier and aggressive, no matter the tier and spec. All of the other cars are fun, but every time I will have a chance I will take the Macan.

I owned AMG cars for many years, enjoyed some of them but always was worried the small ones like GLA45 and A45S I owned would eventually break with very costly repairs -- the four cylinder engines were really pushed to the limit. Then I drove the Macan GTS ICE for a while and loved it. Now the 4S - it is a huge departure from ICE but not looking back really. Love it. It’s a keeper for many years of driving ahead.

this still doesn't address the extremely awkward b-pillar location - and is still a car you fall into vs. climb up into…my wife deeply prefers the Macan to Taycan for ingress/egress and daily usage.

having driven both the Taycan remains the superior "drive" - but the Macan so far for me is a super daily and more practical day to day vs. Taycan.

YMMV…also the Macan's pricing is less eye watering vs. the Taycan's "halo" pricing - too much money vs. too little "value" - although the Taycan is excellent - it's priced beyond it's value.

Macan - best small/mid-sized Sporty EV SUV
Taycan - best sports sedan (happens to be an EV)
911 - best sports car

collect them all for maximum enjoyment and daily choice to fit your needs/purpose/desires…

@W1NGE Did you end up buying the Macan EV?
Nope, still have the Macan T. Had a Turbo and 4S on loan and decided they weren't quite were they needed to be. Next year I'll replace the Macan T (it has been 100% flawless since new) with a Macan EV of some description when the deals are on.
