Could it be the adjustment knob for the steering column you mean?

Could it be the adjustment knob for the steering column you mean?
That's underneath whether it be powered or manual.

Without a picture we can only guess but it may be a sensor rather than a button.

might be a light sensor for dimming the displays - but that's just a guess…or it's an access "port" for getting tools behind the dash to access screws and such

those are my guesses
