The safety sound does seem to go too long compared to other cars.

I wish the sport sound was louder.

This sport sound is just software. It should be included with no charge. I won't pay 500 bucks in order to have this option.

Is it? I’m guessing someone has access to maintenance docs so we can see if there are extra parts involved.

My 2018 BMW X3 had a separate physical sound module for blending/enhancing the internal sound with engine sounds so you could have both a quiet cabin and still “hear” the sporty exhaust.

The VW SoundAktor system had separate transducers to add exhaust rumble to the cabin.

It’s reasonable that it could just be software, since the car has some hardware to make external sound either way, but given that it plays outside of the car with some volume and depth, and the history of other implementations it’s possible there are extra components. They would probably want it to sound the same regardless of the speaker system you choose, so there may be extra cabin transducers too.

There's more to it than just software. This is the case with the Taycan, and it should be the same with the Macan.
Electric Macan EV Still sounds good without sports sound package? 1745332146217-qs

Porsche Electric Sport Sound - Porsche (9J1-044-900-20)

I assume the additional hardware is used to project the sound to the outside. If it were just interior sound, it could be done using the standard sound system and some software.

It’s a “cute” option to have but definitely not worth the price. It should be offered at a price enough to cover the cost of the hardware or with minimal profit… I guess that is not the Porsche’s way! 🤷‍♂️
It would be nice if it eventually allows you to play different sounds. However, it is hard to convince the Germans to do it differently!

To the question of the OP "does it still sound good without?", my answer would be yes. It's an EV so it does not sound a lot anyway, and it's really nice to have a quiet car during long drives. And there is still that sound coming from the motors if you pay attention.
Now, to the related question "does it sound better with?", then I'm split. I have it on mine and, while it can be funny when driving on twisty roads or hitting the throttle hard, it can also get boring quickly when cruising. So I find that I turn it off most of the time actually...
If you want to get a more sporty feeling with some audio feedback on your acceleration and speed, it's a nice to have, but there are probably other options you should consider before spec'ing this one. If you still have a few extra $$$ to spend after you spec'd the car you want, then come back to it. My thoughts.
