Did I blow it by not ordering the HUD?

I dislike and never use the HUD on my 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge. I also can't see that HUD when I'm wearing sunglasses. So, I decided to save the money and skip it on my new Macan 4.

I'm now wondering if that was a blunder. Thoughts?

To see HUD in glasses, all you need is non-polarized glasses.

HUD is very configurable and thus can be minimal. IMO it’s really useful to have directions, your speed and speed limit in front of you, without looking down or to the side screen.

Not a blunder. The essence of the car doesn’t depend on the HUD. You didn’t like a previous HUD. You’ve got a bit of buyer’s remorse - it’ll pass.

It's all personal preference. I love the HUD because it allows me to take less moments off the road since I'm constantly checking my speed.

The only thing I dislike about the HUD is that at night time, the background (whatever it's called) that the display is projected onto isn't completely black so it is a bit distracting when it's very dark outside. Imagine an LCD screen with a completely black picture, the backlit from the LCD is how it looks. I should probably turn it off at night time to prevent that but day time, it's great.

But that is an issue with all HUDs I ever tried, not Porsche specific

Only a blunder if you actually wanted it.

Studies have shown that there's no actual time saved in glancing at a HUD vs the gauge cluster. In both cases, your eyes are just refocusing to process particular points of information instead of scanning the road. There's mixed results on whether it affects safe driving behavior by improving speed awareness or encourages riskier driving because of distraction from what's happening on the road itself.

So like most things, it's really only about personal preference and how YOU like to get information while you drive.

If you generally don't like a HUD, then there is no particular reason to get the Porsche HUD. I personally wouldn't option a vehicle without it at this point because I'm so used to them now, but in my opinion the Porsche HUD is as good and useful as most others. I find the artificial reality aspects to be a gimmick for the most part and so I've turned them off.

Thanks, all. I think I should have just ponyed up the cash, but I also think it's right that my buyer's remorse will pass. Also, part of what allowed me to make this splurge (for me, anyway) was that I kept the final sticker shock level lower by being stingy on some of my add-ons (e.g., I did get four wheel steering, but not four zone climate control, not Innodrive, and not some other bells and whistles).

Usually there’s an adjustment for brightness of the HUD, you can tune it to be visible but not have the background. Across five different cars and four brands I’ve always been able to find a balance where the HUD content is visible but the background is not.

I wear two different brands of polarized sunglasses, and neither has a problem with the HUD.
Agree, all other HUD I have had polarized glasses were an issue, not with my Macan. I love the HUD and would order it again.

So, for someone who didn't have HUD before, I just wanted to try it. The AR HUD that is on my Macan 4 is great. Initially, that floating feeling was distracting but I pushed through and within a week, it became indispensable. Remember when key-less entry was new, when I didn't think it was much, then we get, perimeter lock and unlock. These are things we can't imagine having a car without now. AR HUD is not yet that imperative but it does have some advantages beyond the shifting of focus, beyond the directions, and beyond road speed limits and obstacles when parking, etc. Collision/proximity warning in the dark for example, is one of those things that makes it great.

So yes, I am very happy I got that.
