You know how in gas vehicles when it said 0 miles to empty you actually might have had 10-20 more miles before you truly were out? Anyone ever pushed it to or past 0? I got caught in unexpected traffic today and while I was nowhere near empty it made me think……

Yes. As Kyle@OutOfSpec, Tom @StateOfCharge, and others have tested, the Macan EV can not be counted on to have any reserve range, e.g., 0% SOC = 0 miles more

Macan Range Test

See the video starting at 38 minutes. Once It went to zero SOC, it had about 4 miles and then went dead. Shutting it off and restarting gave just a bit more. So little left that I’d consider zero = zero.

If I remember that video there was a slight downhill at the end. What if there was an uphill, so IMO I too would not count on any reserve on a Macan. Also unlike range testers I never want to take my battery anywhere near that low.

agreed! Because that would also mean some nasty traffic 😂

Getting caught in traffic is the best thing that could happen to you if you were worried about not having enough charge to get to where you could charge. Unlike with an ICE, an electric vehicle is more efficient the slower you go. Even slowing down and staying in the far right lane will noticeably increase your effective range, but a traffic jam would give you a huge increase without you having to inconvenience other drivers--the inconvenience is already baked in for everyone.

I think a common variation on this concern is that the heating or air conditioning needed if you were stuck would quickly drain your HV battery. This belief probably arose from comparison for ICE cars (for air conditioning) and from early EVs with small capacity batteries and resistive heating (for heat). The Macan has a relatively large battery, and a heat pump for climate control, so for our cars even those early concerns would not be a factor.

Um you come to a stop obviously.

Software dictates the behaviour. If you power off and leave for a while then you might get a few more yards down the road.

It's a 100 kWh pack but limits us to 95 of it so there is probably some reserved at 0% in order to prevent the battery from going truly to 0 but it's not something we have access to so for all intents and purposes, 0 is 0.

made me wonder if the Macan does what my Taycan v1 did when running low on fuel . Amber lights and speed restrictions. Also wonder if you can alter miles left at end of journey to minimise this as with Taycan?

Such a big fear of mine, what do you do with an EV that is stranded due to range in a remote area where help (especially for an EV) is far away?

I go on some road trips to see national parks in my gas macan and cayenne (both are gone now), and I would bring a full size front wheel/tire and 1 jug of fuel with me and I feel really safe and prepared, but for EV its way more anxious.

I can bring a full size spare wheel/tire with me in the trunk of the macan ev, but what if on the way to a national park, some charging destination are the ONLY choice (like halfway route 395) is down/out of action?

To me, any ev is too scary to road trip with, I'm currently looking to buy another Cayenne in addition just for road tripping.

I understand your thoughts fully. However we just came back from a road trip to British Columbia. Charged just fine at every Electrying American place we had planned to.

The key as we all know is planning before we set out on ourr EV road trips (including always having a back up station within reach) — but on this routes trip as our earlier ones we never needed to even think about “Plan B” after the pre-trip planning was completed. Used the Porsche route planner and before we left double checked everything with PlugShare and A Better Route Planner (ABRP) app.

We will head out on another road trip once the “kids” go back to school, this time to the CA Redwoods. Like all our previous, and all totally successful EV road trips before we will plan ahead before heading out (which I find is a fun exercise anyway).

With our Level 2 in our garage, most days we return home and choose not to plug it in (still have tons of range left). Plug in on-average every third day when home.

Everyone has a different level of risk they are willing to accept, and that can change with experience. It took me a while to build my confidence in road tripping an EV, first with my wife's BMW i3 (~160 miles of range, plus gas range extender), then with a Tesla Model Y. After 5 years of building up that "muscle", I felt confident enough to take my daughter to incoming freshman weekend--four hours driving each way--a week after I got my Macan EV.

Some folks like to plan every charging stop on their route, and I started out doing that, too. At this point, I'm comfortable just doing general research about what charging is available along the route.

I actually had closer calls in an ICE vehicle, on my first road trip to the mountain West a few years ago. I nearly ran out of gas driving through northern Arizona, and then again along I-40 in New Mexico. As someone who grew up on the East Coast, I had no concept of how far apart services are out there. Being forced to plan ahead a little for an EV was actually good for me. I took several road trips in my Tesla out West, and never really worried. I hope to take similar trips in my Macan.
