After a month of real-world use with navigation, the heads up display (HUD), and 3rd party nav (mostly Waze), we have some conclusions:

  1. Both my wife and I love the HUD. We were both skeptical before acquisition. She was resistant to using it on first drives. And we both won't give it up now.
  2. The PORSCHE MACAN EV Navigation displays directions in our HUD. We love that feature. It's more precise with turn direction naming than the voice tends to be, especially around complicated A/B/C exits.
  3. The downside is that 3rd party navigation, like Waze, is more up-to-date with construction changes. And Waze (or other CarPlay navigation) turn by turn directions don't display in the HUD. We really wish this worked.
  4. We've found that we now run both Waze and Porsche Nav at the same time and look for discrepancies, always following Waze, which is just much more accurate.
  5. Waze has the ability to display J1772 charging stops on the route. But we still use Porsche Navigation to get pre-conditioning for charging stops.
  6. The most desirable outcome for us appears to be either for Porsche to use Waze as its backend planner and mapping assistant for integrated NAV or to allow CarPlay navigation to display turn-by-turn directions in the HUD. If Andraid phone navigation displayed turn-by-turn directions in the HUD, I think I would literally buy an Android phone and leave it in the car to get Waze navigation. I guess Waze navigation as an app on the car that displayed turn-by-turn navigation in the HUD would also be an even more attractive solution than any of the phone based options (CarPlay or Android). We would pay to upgrade the Internet connection in the car to get that feature.

My 4s has not yet been delivered. But I was already afraid that I would have to use Waze and Porsche Nav at the same time in future. No other navigation system comes close to Waze.

I use Apple Maps, also in HUD, I hate the look of Waze and Apple Maps is as good or better in my region then Waze, yeah I know these mobile police controls are not in there. Since recently ABRP also acquired the possibility to be displayed in the front and HUD display … so it’s clear the API is open now and any navigation app should be able to display on the additional screens so maybe you should ask Google to implement this … if enough people do it they probably will implement this.

I will look into this. At one point, one of my former students was a leader of this software development team. If I can figure out the APIs, it's possible that I could even write a reference visualization using Google Maps.

Also what Porsche should provide is that Apple CarpPlay apps can trigger the preconditioning of the battery, when I use ABRP, it can trigger my iX’s pre conditioning button, so I can decide to push it or not …

When I activate nav on Waze, it deactivates Porsche nav: so actually, I activate Porsche nav, and I display Waze map on the central display without nav…

How do you manage to activate navigation on both Porsche Nav AND Waze at the same time ? So you see Porsche nav on HUD/driver display and Waze nav on central display.
Help is welcomed 😀

By having a bug, sometimes you can have both, but to avoid legal issues and confusing almost all manufactures will stop the current running when you start navigation on a second app …

I've had this bug 1 or 2 times, I thought it was a feature!
Too bad, thanks for the explanation….

You're going to turn me into a Youtube content creator.

So, first, I do have a passenger display, and I don't know if that affects the situation.

Second, I had no idea starting PCM navigation and Waze on iOS through CarPlay at the same time was not supposed to work. It certainly does work simultaneously on my car. The audio from both Nav sources comes through the car's speakers, sometimes at the same time but usually PCM Nav and then Waze.

If you want to see a video, I will make a very crappy video of my center screen and the passenger screen displaying both navigation systems at the same time. But, even if I have Waze running on my phone in the background and PCM Nav running on the center screen, Waze's voice still comes through the car's speaker system.

it would be nice to see the process you follow to enable that!
At least one time, I did have both nav systems activated, (Waze on CarPlay/central display - PCM nav) but can’t do it anymore…
I will try to activate Waze through the passenger display if it makes any difference
(Exact same setup here: passenger screen, iOS, carplay, Waze!)

My experience has been different…

Through CarPlay, Apple Maps is well integrated with the HUD and the other two displays (note: I do NOT have the passenger display). The HUD gets next turn, distance, and lane suggestions. The right most “dial” of the instrument cluster also displays all of these details when the nav dial is active. When the center of the instrument cluster is showing the map, you get an auto-zooming closeup of the route, while the center display shows the whole route (zoomed out). The only thing missing are the AR arrows indicating the location of the next turn.

Waze, Google Maps, and other nav apps don’t currently support the HUD. While there has been conjecture on this forum, I don’t think we know whether this is an Apple issue (i.e., lockout) or a 3rd party programming issue (i.e., lack of API support). Time will tell. Any Android users experiencing something different?

Next, I cannot run more than one navigation system at a time. If I’m running the built in nav and start any nav app in CarPlay, it shuts down built in nav—and vice versa.

While I recognize that Apple Maps performance/accuracy varies by region, my experience with it has been very positive. IMHO, the speed check warnings are better than a radar detector.

Finally, Apple Maps via CarPlay does support EV routing, but it is not yet implemented on the Macan. My conversations with a Porsche NA tech support person indicated that they are working on it and we can expect to see that in a software update at some point. No idea if that implementation will support battery preconditioning.

As always, YMMV.
