Porsche has released its global sales results for 2024, reporting 310,718 vehicle deliveries, a 3% decline compared to 2023. One of the highlights is the Macan EV, which managed to outsell its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart in the fourth quarter of the year. On the flip side, the fully electric Taycan struggled to find buyers, with sales nearly halving compared to the previous year.

The Porsche Macan EV made its debut in January 2024, but customers didn’t get their hands on one until the very end of September. Of the 27,795 units sold in Q4, nearly 66% (18,278) were electric, while the remaining 9,517 were gas-powered models.

Why the Macan EV’s Win Needs an Asterisk

Before anyone pops champagne over the Macan EV outpacing its aging ICE counterpart, it’s important to note that the gas-powered version was discontinued in Europe, one of Porsche’s key markets, as of spring 2024, due to tougher cybersecurity regulations. Buyers in the EU essentially had no choice but to go electric if they wanted a Macan. Meanwhile, in the U.S. and other regions, Porsche still offers both versions side by side.

The hidden problem here is Taycan sales.

With Taycan sales plummeting, I expect Porsche to reevaluate their plans for EV expansion.

We'll certainly continue to see the Taycan and eMacan, although a couple more years like this and they may discontinue the Taycan. Will we see any other models? Will the electric Cayman/Boxster/Cayenne ever hit production? The Cayenne is the most likely, but I won't be surprised if they scrap the other two.

I also don't know how much they'll really invest into improving the current models. At some point we'll likely see the 25 Taycan battery tech in the eMacan, but beyond that I don't expect much.

The initial demand for the eMacan was large but it's already become quite easy to get an allocation and we're seeing cars available at dealerships now.

Same situation will arise with forthcoming Cayenne EV which will spike. Key difference that EV, ICE and hybrid will continue to be developed and sold alongside which tells its own story. Didn't happen with Macan due to the cybersecurity concern (believe that if you will) but i still expect ICE and hybrids of the new Macan will surface.

I wonder if you could expand on why you think 2025 Taycan battery tech is superior to Macan EV. I have all the tech materials and there is no apparent superiority of the HV battery in the Taycan. For example, Macan EV actually has the split battery feature charging at 400V stations, but 2025 Taycan does not.

2025 Taycan Battery chemistry is the same 8:1:1 as Macan EV. Pouch design.
Yes, it is bigger, higher charge peak, but not superior on its own.

This is Macan EV battery spec. Prismatic design. It is superior to Taycan in the reparability aspect.
If one module in a Taycan goes dead, the car is bricked and cannot be moved on its own.
I am not sure if this is the same in the Macan EV, but this seems to indicate that replacing modules have been thought of, unlike in a Taycan.

Yet U.S. EV sales overall were up 9% in 2024, with specially BMW U.S. EV sales up 3% (compared to Porsche EV’s being down that same 3%).

I read in a car magazine yesterday that Porsche are now thinking about producing a Macan hybrid and a Macan petrol due to the uncertainty of the EV market.

Out of Spec video of CES 2025 is interesting. I get the feeling that the future is electric. Politics and big oil corporations may slow it down, but won’t be able to stop it! The current car manufacturers better adapt or they are going to be taken over by new companies (Asian). I think some car companies here in the US are starting to work on it as well as some European. But they are lagging behind. I see encouraging signs from BMW, MB and others. Not sure about Porsche’s and VW’s approach. The bottom line is that new and better cars are coming sooner than later, so the current models are always going to be “worse”. I’m planning to enjoy my Macan now, and not worry too much about what else is out there. When I see something that excites me enough to switch or the car is out of warranty and potentially going to cause more problems than pleasure, I’ll get a new one. The future seems bright!

No turning back in our household. Nor even in the U.S. with its 9% increase last year. It is only a matter of time. True the early excitement with one year a 52% increase in EV sales greatly tempered, but the march forward to EV’s is inexorable. Depending on which of two stats to believe, China’s EV sales went up either 48% or 52% last year — with worldwide EV’s just had a one year 27% growth.

As to Porsche, while they have made a deserved killing price-wise in their true sports cars, IMO its EV pricing is too high. I still will buy one at what I consider its inflated place, but for the mass market, candidly will its ego allow them to lower EV pricing ever? Or maybe stick to current pricing and spend more and get better batteries and put them into future EV’s — in future Macan’s as they just did (but clearly not enough) for the Taycan).

Mfr's aren't gonna stop making ev's...
the Taycan will simply be refreshed, and will probably look closer to other established models like the panemera...or maybe we'll just see a Panemera EV option as opposed to it's own EV model.
but either way... i don't think you should compare the taycan to the macan at all. they are not in the same market.
The macan appeals to a much broader market. And the macan is probably cannibalizing some of the taycan sales too.

EV market sales are up... and with the investments in the ev infrastructure, new mfr's coming online...this ain't stopping. While the oil market and gas prices are probably going to be more destabilized in the next few years with the impending wars...

Porsche and most other European manufacturers are totally committed to EVs. They have little choice given that the sale of new ICE powered cars is due to be banned sometime between 2030 and 2035 in most of Europe. Manufacturers are already facing government imposed financial penalties for selling more than a certain proportion of their cars with ICE power.

The Macan EV platform is shared with Audi and is pure EV, it cannot be converted to ICE power (hybrid or pure), so no ICE power in this car in the future.

Macan and Taycan occupy different positions in the market. The market, at least here, for secondhand luxury 4 door cars is small (you can't get your dogs, sports equipment and kids in them). The market for secondhand SUVs is large (because you can get your dogs, sports equipment and kids in them). Hence one reason why used Taycan values have crashed and this has put people off buying new ones. Because the Macan is an SUV, its residuals are likely to be better.

I think what people who are forecasting doom for EV's are missing is that tech, efficiency, cost and infrastructure are all improving, and quickly. (And this is the primary reason EV's are depreciating so quickly; it's NOT because they suck in general). Even with the status quo, some of us already prefer EV's to ICE. With each succeeding year (regardless of government regs), there's no reason to think the trends will stop. And just because most of us are not yet directly exposed to what is happening in China, that does not mean it's not happening.

I for one think my Macan 4 is superior to my Macan GTS in almost every way. I hope that the 718 successors will be similarly improved; even if not, the ICE versions are very long in the tooth and the chances of those being rehabilitated seem minuscule to me.
