I have been experiencing alarming braking by my Macan while travelling at autoroute speeds while in cruise control. The cars navigation suddenly responding to an incorrectly assessed lower speed limit which appeared on the HUD as 70kph instead of 130kph. I did the same journey again later and same happened. It happened again on another fast road. Quite alarming and dangerous, esp as French drivers are the world’s worse tailgaters. I can only assume that at some point these stretches of road were limited and the navigation data has not been updated. How can you force the Maxan’s nav to update? I thought is was done seamlessly without input needed.

Turn the sign recognition feature off and accept responsibility for driving and recognizing speed limit changes.

I would disable the recognition of speed limit signs and control the maximum speed myself.

This is one of many arguments people make about this car's assistance systems being simply dangerous and causing risky situations on the road.

This is not just one or two people, in some regions most users complain speed recognition does not work well.

It just doesn’t work - both of these systems:
  • Cruise speed auto adjustment, based on what the car thinks is the speed limit (wrong more often than its right) and
  • Cruise based on topography/slowing for junctions which interferes on otherwise straight roads/motorways where it thinks there is a crossroads (Does this reliably on M1 southbound near Watford Gap, and other random times on smaller roads too - it brakes HARD)

We've only had our new 4S a few days, my experience with Drive Assist / adaptive cruise:
  • the car is quite eager (hard and early) braking when approaching roundabouts,
  • I don't see an 'auto' settig for cruise - like I do with the limiter, hence the car is not changing the 'set' speed, so no braking when it gets the speed limit wrong. How would I change the target speed manual set/auto setting?

You can adjust both of those settings in the PCM: Drive screen (car logo)-> assistance -> assistance system settings (cog wheel):

How fast you want it to corner/approach to roundabouts here:

and whether to set the suggested new speed by pulling resume, doing it automatically or via the cruise stalk turned off altogether.

However both of these features I've turned off completely for now! until they can update it and make it reliable.

Thank you, sooo many options to discover 😁!

In our car, the default for limiter is 'auto' but cruise is 'pull resume' - or maybe the dealer pre-set those for 'safety!

Lots of suggestions for modifying driver aids settings thanks, but was really asking about navigation data updates.

From this thread, I discovered my car is set to *not* automatically change speed based on what it discovers, i.e. "slamming on the brakes", which I'd a thought was a useful nugget? For that, it is necessary to find out where the setting is, but apologies for hijacking the thread.

I too would like to know if/how we can provide feedback to get the navigation updated with correct speed info.

One complaint that I've seen is that the car sometimes interprets the round maximum speed signs on the back of trucks / lorries as road speed limits and then brakes abruptly. For that reason alone I would disable the speed sign recognition.

That is an issue that is unique to the UK and the rest of Europe, we don't have those in the US.

Turn the sign recognition feature off and accept responsibility for driving and recognizing speed limit changes.
Accept responsibility for driving!! Pompous ass.
There was no speed limit change to recognise - the Macan responded to a NON-EXISTENT speed limit presumably appearing in its mapping.

I assume you didn't have a response to the actual question posed about updating the nav data or you didn't read that far.

What I do know is that when someone calls someone else a pompous ass you can bet that one of them is. Good luck with your problems.

When I got caught out a couple of times with the Drive Assist rapidly slowing on fast dual carriageways, I raised it with the dealer who said - like many others are reporting - that they'd never heard of this problem before.

I was/am sufficient concerned that I actually raised a complaint with UK Department of Vehicle Safety.

The long and largely pointless reply included this wonderful nugget:

"When brakes are applied through cruise control, the brake lights operate and
other drivers, who should be driving within road environment conditions and highway
code recommendations, are warned of the vehicle’s actions. I appreciate braking may
seem harsh and rates of deceleration are defined by type approval specifications."

So it seems, officially you should not be concerned about your car slamming on the brakes as the vehicles around you will not be driving too close to take emergency action, nor will their attention be momentarily distracted - you'll be fine.

For me I turn it off as others have suggested - potential death trap otherwise.
