The One reason I did not get the Macan 4 and ordered the 4S

Agreed, although the 4 has great acceleration once it reaches 10-20 mph. In addition, the 4S was only about $5,000 more than the 4 would have been for the options I selected, at least in the U.S.

My only disappointment about the 4S is that the EPA range is estimated at 20 miles less than the 4 and not any better than the Turbo.

I take delivery of my 4S in about a week and will let you know how the acceleration off the line compares with the 4 that I test drove a few weeks ago.

Side question, you said your 4S is being delivered next week. The 4S has only been available to order for maybe two months, no? I ordered my 4 in July and it won’t be delivered until late December early January. You seem to be getting your car after only a couple of months while I’m waiting 6. So how are you getting your car before I get mine.

Depends on the allocation the dealership had. Not all dealerships get the same slots.

If your dealer had a December allocation but his had a September allocation… done.

As @tmrqs mentioned, my dealership had a 4S allocation which was already on order for their inventory, so they simply modified the build to my specs.

Don't be distracted by the EPA number, they probably just assigned the turbo mileage because the S was a late comer. I'm sure the S will prove out closer to the 300 mile mark and you can always drive like your grandma initially to hit that magic number once and then file it away! Is anyone seeing any S folks out there who have actually tested their max range? The bigger issue is the 4 sluggishness off the start without launch and whether any of that spills over to the S. I'm sure this was purposeful to get the 4 mileage over that decisive 300 number, based on power inefficiency from a static start.

Can someone with a 4S please describe how the acceleration feels just flooring it from a dead stop (no launch control)? As mentioned the base 4 has a real lag and the Turbo had none.

I bought a Macan 4 even though I well could have gone for the turbo (S wasn’t available when I ordered last summer). I didn’t go Turbo because I have a lead foot / speed addiction, and my wife as a passenger is constantly “helping me cure“ this condition. My 2011 Cayman S did 0-60 in 4.8, my 2016 Cayenne GTS was the same, and so too now 4.8 (+/-) for my Macan 4. So, not super fast, but I believe I will be happy, even though as of yet I haven’t tried sport mode or launch control.

I did do the Experience Center in early December, where I drove the bejesus out of the Turbo, including multiple launch control max runs, but after that I thought, “OK, super nice, but this is WAY more than I would want to tempt myself with on the street, and how often would I really want to use the full beast mode?” The driving instructor with 20+ years of Porsche experience said, “At the end of the launch control straightaway [which I’m guessing is maybe a quarter mile], the Macan 4 is only 15 miles per hour slower at that point than the Turbo.” I drove the Taycan S as well. The Taycan S hit the end of the launch straightaway @ 120-ish mph, the Macan Turbo a bit less, maybe 5 mph less. Based on his comment, I assume then that the 4 is at about 100 mph here (I didn’t launch the 4). His take was that for the vast majority of people, the 4 will be more than enough.

Incidentally, on the separate track course the Turbo (and Taycan) easily kept up with the 911 S pace car which I think wasn’t holding back much, if at all - but again, the 4 likely wouldn’t lag much here and driving any of these three vehicles at this level would be way beyond reasonable on the streets.

In real life, this worked to my advantage a few days ago. I was in my 4 and had the chance to line up with a BMW M5 at a light. Largely because I knew he’d walk me, I didn’t take the lane, but stayed behind him at the light. If I’d had the Turbo, I’d have resorted to my competitive nature and we both would have been hitting 100+ on a 45 mph street. Fun and exhilarating, but better to do at a closed track. Instead of a massive shot of adrenaline, I got a calm experience.

The S is tempting, but even so still might be way more than is needed 99% of the time. Yet for Porsche, this might be the sweet spot in the lineup.

@USMA81, you should have been beside me when I ordered mine, so much wisdom …
On the other hand, I had an encounter with a 4, I do not have any markings, but the wheel arches give it away, he looked at them at the stop light … so we both drove of in a gentle way .
I need to refrain myself from time to time, but knowing ”I’m the fastest” helps to ease off. But hindsight I should have waited for the 4S … I’m sure it will have better range than the Turbo and it’s more than enough.

Just wanted to update.

The 4S is a freaking rocket. Fantastic. Feels VERY fast. I'll try to get a stopwatch time soon, it feels like a sub 3.5 car to me.

Both 0-60 and pulls at speed feel great.

(I'm coming from a Taycan Turbo S. This car is not that fast, obviously, but just in case anyone wonders if I know what fast feels like. )

I drove a turbo first then the 4 (no S out yet)...Turbo was amazing but stupid fast and the 4 was "fast enough". Ended up with a 4 they had in stock...I would have ordered the S if I had not got this one. Now driving it, its so silent and isolated that you miss the concept of speed...I'm always surprised when I see how fast I'm going. Also, I am consistently the first off the line so I never feel the that its response is slow. I have to work my 911 pretty hard to be faster than my 4. So yea, good enough

Hi Everyone

I’ve been driving a 4 demo for the last three weeks (long story) and picked up my new 4S today.

TBH, the 4 is plenty fast enough for most driving; you won’t be disappointed. The 4S is significantly faster but without feeling remotely intimidating. (By way of reference, I’ve spent the last 5 years driving an Alfa Romeo Guilia Quadrifoglio).

It seems to me that every car choice is a compromise somewhere along the line; you really need to sort out what criteria are most important to you.

Having raced superbikes in my past, the Quad used to be a great compromise for me. Near supercar performance and agility in a practical, medium sized 4 door saloon.

I chose the 4S because I’ve now reached the stage in my life (age 64) where a bit more height and comfort is welcome, but I was unwilling to give up too much of the speed I’ve been used to. I think I’m going to be very happy with my choice.
