Electric Macan EV Carwow: I drove these NEW electric cars until they DIED! Screenshot 2024-12-05 at 11.40.12 AM

the analysis at the end regarding the actual cost to drive these things is pretty interesting - EV's are rapidly going from cheaper to drive than gas cars to 2x more expensive…electricity rates are out of control - and the cost for fastDC charging is also very expensive - I understand they need to make a profit and the sites/equipment is expensive - so the base kWh rate+overhead+reasonable-profit…makes fastDC charging non-competitive price/mile vs. gasoline…

I hope this gets better over time - but it really demonstrates how efficient/effective our petro-chemical distribution network is and how much maturity it has in that we've wrung all the costs out of it such that you can pump oil from the anywhere in the would, transport it to a refinery, consume 6 or kWh per-gallon refining it, store, transport it to a local distributor, pump it again out of a local tank and into your tank for $6/gallon and the oil companies are wildly profitable at that rate - $6 is nothing for anything and yet I can drive 30+ miles on that $6…

I love my EV's and really really really want them to succeed but the fossil fuel industry and their products and their current costs are really a modern miracle…this Ev stuff has an uphill battle.

Down here, we pay 23 cents per kwh at off-peak pricing. That means it would cost $23.00 for a "full tank." Plus we have solar so in theory, I'm charging the car off the sun. Is a gas car more convenient? Of course... but there are some fantastic positives they just can't touch.

PG&E has been unkind to me - we were at $0.15-0.17/kwh off peak - but some how we're now up to $0.31 or more and trending even higher - peak rates are over $0.65/kWh and at that rate is 3x more expensive to drive my Macan per-mile vs. $5.50 gasoline for a 32 mpg vehicle…

gas in Oklahoma was $2.59/gallon in November when I was driving my Macan EV home … no wonder people don't want EV's.

Blessed with very cheap energy here in NZ (and averaging 80% national renewable generation), I pay NZD$0.13c (USD$0.08) off peak (9pm-7am) and NZD$0.22 (USD$0.13) peak per kWh.

Prices seem fairly stable here. My electricity retailer also gives me my home charging rates at public DC charging with our largest charging network, ChargeNet, normally they charge NZD$0.85 per kWh.

yeah, idky electricity rates are going up. what's his face did a video specifically on Cali and how they're passing the cost of upgrading their infrastructure on to the consumer of course...
but gas is just so volatile.

i haven't looked at the bill in a while.. Looks like i pay ~0.176 per KWh...
that's $17 to fill up.... still a win. I haven't been able to fill up for under $20 since i owned a '95 ford escort

I live in MI and our energy company BPW, is owned by the local city and is so good and efficient. Converted from coal to gas with a new plant 8 years ago, paid it off 10 years early and we only pay .12, 24/7. Energy does not have to be expensive if it is done well.

In Tucson I'm paying 13.6c/kwh 24/7 locked in for the next 8 years. On a community solar system run by our local power company TEP. A little lower than a regular customers now, but in 5 or 6 years I expect an even greater difference.

.23 at home or at a public charger? That’s either pretty high or pretty cheap.

Comed standard rate in Chicago is about 9c/kwh + delivery (about 9c/Kwh as well). However it offers hourly pricing as an alternative. This makes a lot of sense for EV owners who can charge during the very very cheap off peak hours. Generally around 1am to 5am. Some hourly rates can be negative at times depending on demand vs supply. Example below for 12/4. These do not include the delivery and summer hourly rates can be very high for a couple hours during the day on very hot summer days.
This is a great way to coach people to shift their heavy usage (washer, dishwashing, EV charging, ...) when there is less demand.

Well, electricity prices will increase a lot in the future is a fact. In Spain we pay between 40% and 50% taxes for each liter of fuel. Where do you think those rates will go when a significant percentage of cars are electric?
Ask the Norwegians...
