lol the clearly weren't trying to maximize their range in this test... but entertaining as always.
Well, electricity prices will increase a lot in the future is a fact. In Spain we pay between 40% and 50% taxes for each liter of fuel. Where do you think those rates will go when a significant percentage of cars are electric?
Ask the Norwegians...
in the states, so far, they're increasing the EV registration fees. They're like 5x that of ICE registration fees

That will be the only practical way to collect the equivalent in road taxes that are collected in gas taxes (and roads need maintenance regardless of wh is driving on them of course). You can't separate which electrons go to your HVAC or washing machine (which don't need roads) vs going on your car, so some other method of assessing a road tax will be needed. Ideally, a per mile tax wold be the most equivalent to a gas tax (more driving, more gad, more tax) but that would mean the government knows how much you drive which will rub many the wrong way, so some flat rate will likely be what happens. This reminds me of diesel cars many many years ago when they could use heating fuel (which were not subject rot road taxes) instead of diesel at the gas pump.

we have report our mileage every year when registering, and the mileage is noted during our yearly inspections... I don't know why they didn't just use mileage. I assume that with registration, it's self reported, so ppl could lie...but not with inspections, as this would be done by a lic business...

I live in Austin, TX, and I believe the electricity rate for my power was about $0.13 per kWh, with no peak hours. I also had an Audi SQ7, which cost me about $75 per week in premium gas.

Now, I typically drive my Macan 4, which costs me about $50 a month in electricity. I charge it with a Level 2 charger at home. I haven't installed solar yet.

I've seen many comparisons between high-performance EVs and grandmother cars that make 32 mpg, but only if you drive with a highly light foot.

I believe the cost of electricity is high because we've been made to fear nuclear power. If you look at the data, there are many other things to be concerned about, but nuclear power shouldn't be one of them.

The cost of home charging in the UK, where this test was conducted, can be as low as ÂŁ.075 per kW/h (over night rate) and fast chargers are about 10 time more expensive ÂŁ0.74 per kW/h (Tesla superchargers are less). I have run an EV for the last 3 years and about 90% of my charging has been at home. Therefore, it's only when travelling unusually long distances that costs here get even remotely close to the figures given in this video.

Yeah, I wish my state had safety inspections, cars driving around here in Florida with bald tires and non functional lights. I grew up in PA where they kept on top of these things with safety inpections required for registration renewals.

No registration fee changes here in Florida for EV's yet. I guess this will be a state thing until possible federal changes.

In the US different states are already looking at this. I believe Oregon already charges a tax fee based on how much you drive. Virginia has a voluntary program and Georgia, where I live, participates in a study program for the east coast. They are looking on how to monitor, GPS vs a flash drive connected to the car computer vs something similar to the yearly emissions test but for mileage. We already pay 3 times the amount of an ICE car for the yearly fee. The government has been worried about the decrease in fuel tax collections for a while and is looking for ways to increase the revenue in order to maintain roads and whatever else they do with our tax money…

I understand that's the easy way to tax users. However, Infrastructure shouldn't be financed by people who only drive but everyone. This is because everyone benefits from roads even if they aren't driving on them... e.g. Roads enable products to be delivered, etc... Also, if we drive 10 miles or 10000 miles, we still need the full road to be built or maintained and not 1/10 of it... :)
Same for schools, we all pay for them regardless of having children. Schools are a benefit to everyone.

Also, there is a huge cost to burning fossil fuels which is not factored in the price of a gallon. This cost we are all paying as externalities in home insurance, and other costly disasters...

Here the annual tax for an EV is .... ÂŁ0! next year it will rise to ÂŁ190, which is the same as for the least expensive ICE car.

Its more.
Electric car tax in April 2025 will be:
If it is a second year of ownership, its ÂŁ190 standard rate (subject to change before 2025)
Luxury car fee (for cars that cost over ÂŁ40,000 new): ÂŁ410 per year from the second year, for five years.

So, a total of ÂŁ600

But not for a car that's already on the road! That's only ÂŁ190.

Is that definite?
It's not clear when I check online. If you have read this somewhere, let us know.

so you don't have to watch the entire video

the analysis at the end regarding the actual cost to drive these things is pretty interesting - EV's are rapidly going from cheaper to drive than gas cars to 2x more expensive…electricity rates are out of control - and the cost for fastDC charging is also very expensive - I understand they need to make a profit and the sites/equipment is expensive - so the base kWh rate+overhead+reasonable-profit…makes fastDC charging non-competitive price/mile vs. gasoline…

I hope this gets better over time - but it really demonstrates how efficient/effective our petro-chemical distribution network is and how much maturity it has in that we've wrung all the costs out of it such that you can pump oil from the anywhere in the would, transport it to a refinery, consume 6 or kWh per-gallon refining it, store, transport it to a local distributor, pump it again out of a local tank and into your tank for $6/gallon and the oil companies are wildly profitable at that rate - $6 is nothing for anything and yet I can drive 30+ miles on that $6…

I love my EV's and really really really want them to succeed but the fossil fuel industry and their products and their current costs are really a modern miracle…this Ev stuff has an uphill battle.
Interesting but base Macan, naff wheels means that most folk on this forum won’t experience this level of range.
