Latest OutofSpec Dave review - not good

OutofSpec Dave did 3 videos of driving their 4 from collection at Colorado to home at Conneticut I really enjoyed them and found them informative. He has also done other Macan 4 reviews, all of them favourable.

He has just published a 3 month review and virtually trashed the car, poor handling, poor fit & finish etc. He scored it 52 out of a 100 - 25 below a Tesla. I think he has been unduly influenced by the updated Tesla.

As a Brit, I have great difficulty understanding why so many US reviewers rave about Tesla’s and find so many faults with other cars - surely there has to be more about owning and driving an EV than range, lack of being able to Superchargers and lack of NACS adapters. Tesla sales in Europe and the UK have crashed recently - no doubt some will say that Tesla make the best EV’s and I would ask, if they think that, why are they spending time on a Macan forum !
In the video I think his wife is unhappy with a lot of his scores as it’s her Macan and she really enjoys driving it.

He was too harsh with his score, and yes his wife, who I presume drives more and should have had a better say, tended to give a better score on most points, but he managed to subdue her every time. Poor thing

One thing I totally agree with him was about Porsche's own sound system. Its at 31:43
I have it and its perfectly good. As he says, it's probably at par with the Bose. I had Harman Kardon in BMW i4, and I find no noticeable difference. Those still wondering which sound system to get should consider it, save on this and/or spend money on other options. And extra space is also bonus

As you may know, @OutofSpecDave posts here from time to time, and perhaps now that we've called him out, he will speak for himself. He does say he "loves" the car.

I have to say, I did find some of Dave's scores a little harsh, and honestly the negative scores off-base (and unfair; if you have a scoring system and then apply negative scores, you are distorting the system; those should be zeroes IMHO--I don't think anything about the car is worthy of a negative score regardless). I also have to say, at this point it doesn't matter to me personally how others review the car or "score" it, nor what they compare it to. So far, I consider it to be one of the best of the 40 some-odd cars I've owned.

I do regret that any perceived negative reviews might scare off folks who would otherwise enjoy the car.

Awaz - glad you agree. Seems I may have wasted £ 900 on the Bose. On all my previous cars the reviews of the standard systems (Merc’s, BMW’s a Range Rover and Lexus) all said an upgrade was a must, so I presumed the one in the Macan would be the same

dgkhn - the main reason I posted this was because I was totally surprised by the markedly critical thoughts as they seemed to me to be so different to the previous 5 or so reviews.

Bose in the Macan is really below par and not what you would expect and certainly not worth the premium.

It could be an installation issue but the 4S i had at weekend had the same poor Bose. I have it on my Taycan and it is on a different level.

Other issues too with the car and enough for me to rule it out as a 2nd car. I'll wait for the ICE replacement.

I watched a few minutes, but it became obvious that this was not someone who enjoyed driving and was ranting against the EV charging infrastructure. He also has a completely different opinion (subjective) on technology and further viewing is a waste of my time. He appears to be a Tesla fanboy for some reason, fixated on Tesla strong points and ignoring the terrible aspects of the car.

It is obvious his views of the EV charging infrastructure has clouded his judgement of the car. I'm not sure I would like a car he likes, but thats just me.

Yah I generally trust Dave's opinions and think his comments are usually bang on. I just think the scoring system is a bit off. For example:

- Negative scores. Like @dgkhn mentioned, the lack of NACS didn't score 0 it scored a -2 which throws off the scale of the whole scoring.
- Subjective scores. For example, the Dealer or Direct model being 0/1. I mean I personally enjoyed the dealer experience.

Anybody know what rating Dave gives the Model Y for handling if the Macan gets 2.5 out of 5?

I agreed with the one pedal driving Porsche dumb decision, let me clarify, Porsche electric perhaps appeals to a minority of Porsche’s clientele, however brought people like me who use to drive other luxury sedans, I like cars but never go to the track. Is like politics, a car brand can expand the umbrella for other customers. A 911 buyers and an EV for the most part don’t look to the same product, but we both bring money to Porsche. For EV drivers one pedal driving is a big deal, and a small thing for Porsche to add, it’s my understanding that Audi same platform already have strong regen. Is just dumb not to offer it.

When a model 3 is scoring 20 points higher than the Macan, something is seriously wrong with the scoring system or the evaluator.

I think maybe he is putting too much weight on some aspects of EVs while not having enough weight or maybe even missing things that are the reason you want a Porsche.

For example, a model 3 is a fine car for like your kid, but it just isn’t a good car for an adult driver. A sole screen just in the center is not great. FSD is ok as a beta but you could argue most people don’t get it because of price and it shouldn’t get any points. It’s too small and insubstantial like a go kart. The ride and driving dynamics are not sophisticated. Charging curve and speed are average. It’s just not at all in the league of the Porsche.

Like his wife is not going to be driving one of those model 3. There are lots of reasons why and those reasons need some points!

Anyway, Dave is great, but I think he’s really off on this one, or maybe his scoring system needs some different weights that take into consideration those aspects that made him and his wife want the car as soon as it came out.

And dial back some of the things that just don’t matter to the majority of drivers - like tax credit, FSD, one pedal, dealer, value, software updates , brand - sorry it is still a top brand. I mean yes those things matter but I’m still buying the Macan over all others because of things.

And also, deduct some points for Elon which maybe doesn’t affect everyone but surely affects half the country who will now never ever buy a Tesla and are selling theirs to get the Macan EV

Just flip the scores for 3 and Macan and it will be fixed.
