This is, of course, true. And with good reason in the USA, especially for non-Tesla supercharger network cars, like the Macan.

Interesting wheel range factoid for the Turbo models wheels (though not a new one). The 22” “Macan Style’ — wheel pictured below, which Porche describes as “aero,” not only gets better range than every other 22” wheel, but also better than the three 21” options — and is second overall only to the base 20” standard Macan Turbo wheel. The 20” standard wheel, again only considering those who get a Turbo model, leads all the rest of them by a very large range margin.

Nobody seems to have noticed that with a finite life of a battery, changing the Wheel Configuration, affects the efficiency but also the battery life.

In the USA, Tesla has a very limited number of "magic dock" locations that can charge CCS cars like the Macan EV. A year ago, the number was 36 -- 3 in Washington, 1 in Oregon, 4 in Colorado, 2 in Indiana, 2 in Louisiana, 1 in Mississippi, 1 in Illinois, 1 in Kentucky, 1 in Maryland, 1 in Connecticut, 2 in Minnesota. In the state my car is in right now, they have zero.

Porsche has said that, eventually, all Tesla supercharger locations will be open to Macan EVs through the use of a NACS to J1772 converter and a software change both for the car (or app) and at Tesla's supercharger network locations, but there is no published timeline specifically for Porsche cars.

In the USA, there are two ways that a non-Tesla EV can gain access to the Tesla supercharging network.

First, they use what is called a "Magic Dock" supercharger site. These sites are very limited and, a year ago, numbered 36 locations in all of the United States. Magic Dock sites are a tiny fraction of the total number of Tesla sites in the USA.

Second, non-Tesla EVs are enabled on a case-by-case basis through an integration agreement and project between the manufacturer and Tesla. In this second method, each side (Tesla and the manufacturer) must agree to implement a software change that allows the car to use the Tesla supercharging network and the manufacturer and Tesla must agree to an adapter solution (either a native NACS outlet in the car or an adapter).

Manufacturers like Rivian modified the software in their SUVs and sent an OTA update to implement access to the Tesla supercharging network. Mercedes EVs used a clever software trick to enable integration by a change in their iOS and Android apps instead of directly changing the car's software. The latter solution seems fragile but we'll see. Lucid just enabled access via a software change to their cars this week.

There seems to be quite a few more currently.
This can be seen on the Tesla map of chargers “open to other EVs” (= Magic Dock).

There’s also another filter that shows the chargers open to NACS partners (this would be Ford, Rivian, …).

There are more. The Magic Dock allowed Tesla to qualify for U.S. federal government subsidies of $7.5 billion to build out CCS-equipped charging infrastructure. But there are still effectively zero if you're roadtripping across huge chunks of the United States.

In contrast, there are 6 Tesla supercharger sites within 10 miles of a family member's home in the state of Delaware, outside of Washington D.C. The closest Tesla magic dock site is in Philadelphia or Eaton, MD ... more than 2 hours away. If you want to look at the west coast, look at the I90 corridor from Seattle to St. Louis. How many Magic Dock sites are there? California has 5 magic dock sites in the entire state.

I've mapped it and I've just done a holiday road trip where I visited several of the sites. They were very busy with wait times.

Yup, I was going to point out that in the entire Greater Los Angeles area with more than 18 million residents, there is just one Supercharger site with Magic Docks, and it only has 20 chargers total.

Interestingly it is very close to PECLA.
