Edmunds Takes Macan 4 EV to Their Test Track

Just acquired it for the one year long test of it…

I guess on a test track I could see the Macan 4 being a bit underpowered but in my experience the day to day pick up and go is great. No one is street racing Teslas and Hyundais with a Macan anyways, funny comment by Edmunds. I agree options get quite expensive vs competitors but that’s nothing new with the Germans, especially Porsche.

I don’t get why they took it to the track. There is Turbo for that purpose (and just maybe 4s).
This is so misleading review that doesn’t serve any purpose. Seems very incompetent from Edmund.

Yeah, I'm not drag racing folks at stop lights. Works fine in the twisty roads, get great range. Fast enough to get a huge ticket if that's what floats your boat.

I just watched the video as well. I received my Macan 4 EV a couple of weeks ago and absolutely love it. I will not start insulting other cars that I have considered or have been in (friends/coworkers) as each have their advantages, quirks and issues (that might not be so for others). But I noticed since Tesla started succeeding in the EV space, car comparisons are nothing but moving goalposts. A car is faster than a Tesla Plaid? Yeah...but they don't have the Tesla charging network (not a valid argument anymore)! When a Plaid does 0-60 or 1/4 miles faster than a competitor, OMG my Plaid is better than a Ferrari! When range is better than a Tesla...yeah, but the Plaid is faster...or charging is slower! I admit the comments in the video, and the people's comments stung for a second but I disagree with a lot of the Edmunds video. The torque on my Macan 4 is instant and neck-snapping at virtually any speed. I know it's not a 4S or Turbo , but 0-60 in 4.8 is beyond the driving capabilities and needs of 99.999% of the population (at least here in Montreal), especially considering that this kind of power and speed is on a 5150 pounds car. A friend is already comparing their older Model S being much more efficient than my Macan and that it's disappointing for the Porsche. The Macan is a few hundred pounds heavier with much more rubber on the tires...but it doesn't matter, the Model S is better because it uses less energy. Forget about quality, precision etc.

I got the Macan EV for lots of reasons, and it surpassed my wildest expectations in terms of driving precision and feel for what I use it for (daily driver in a traffic-packed city). It's so well dialed-in that it feels like it is connected directly to my brain. I do agree about Porsche's nickel-and-diming on options, but once you drive the car you will understand where the base cost of the car is actually going (i.e. to a phenomenal driving experience). Of course there is a badge premium, but that's completely missing the raison-d'etre of a Porsche, Ferrari etc.

I can tell you I was not cross shopping a Hyundai Ioniq 5N, nor a Tesla. However I am fully aware of how good those cars can be. I have been in an Ioniq 6 (looks better in person to me), umpteen Tesla M3, MY and a Model S etc. All good in their own way but just not for me. Disappointed in the Edmunds video especially given their previous non-test video highly praised the Macan 4.

We extensively cross-shopped the Tesla X and Y against the Macan 4 EV and bought the Macan 4 because the 14-way seats are a lot more comfortable.

My spouse does not care which car accelerates the fastest. She's trading a Lexus RX350 AWD for the Macan 4 EV. if we're going to drive up and down a coast for 14 hours in a day, she wants the car to be comfortable. For her, the best options were from BMW and the Macan EV.

We both agreed that the Rivian's seat comfort was very good, but preferred the faster roadtrip charging of the Macan EV. Also, she thought the Rivian R1 was too big and didn't want to wait for the R2 or R3.

We also looked at Polestar, Mercedes, Volvo, etc. and thought the Macan EV seats (14-way comfort) were better and the road trip charging on the Macan EV was better. 7% to 80% in 23 minutes is great for today's EVs. It's faster than the Tesla solutions and basically all the others except the Audi PPE. BTW, the $100k+ Mercedes was a charging disaster for road trips with multiple charging stops.

I always hated her Lexus RX350 because it steers like an old truck. The Macan 4 was the a reasonable compromise for me -- I can keep my small sports car, and, when we travel distances with 2 golf bags and other luggage, I don't feel like the Macan 4 EV is a huge step down. I wouldn't drive it like I'm on a track because the other occupants (especially my spouse) wouldn't find it appealing anyway.

We did carefully consider the Audi PPE cars but, in the end, we didn't like the USA configurations available on the SQ6 and the Q6. We really wanted the Porsche 14-way seats in a Q6 cruiser, and, while you could come close, we just decided to get what we thought was the best comfort / performance compromise for cruising -- the Macan 4 EV.

Never read the comments in a youtube video on an EV car review.... and especially a luxury EV. You'll get the bots that talk about the death of EVs in general and then more comment about how rediculous the price is, steep depreciation, and then the folks mocking that they will buy it used in a year for half the price.

I've spent a ton of time researching my options, and rationalizing the Porsche premium. I really don't want this to sound arrogant (but it will...) but the vast majority of people that mock luxury items are those that don't have the money to buy them. I know I did when I was younger. However, it's amazing how one's perspective changes after a lifetime of achievements that give you the opportunity to splurge on yourself. Once you get above a baseline of a really good EV, the marginal cost of the Porsche premium is quite high.... just need to decide if it's worth it to you personally, not the snarky user on youtube.

As I have ordered a 4s I’ve been viewing a lot of reviews on YouTube. I found the Edmond’s one to be highly biased against the car. If he wanted a track drive he should have driven a Turbo In my humble opinion.
The reviews that I find the most informative and are wholly independent are the Out Of Spec ones and a British one where they drove 6 EV’s from 100% charge to 0%. The Macan beat the range of the Tesla and it was a very fair review as all the cars were in convoy so in the traffic & weather conditions. It is no coincidence that the British test proved 320 miles at about 70 mph and Kyle achieved 298 miles in the American test in colder conditions

Spot on similar for us as a couple.

As other have suggested - expecting this car to perform on the track is just foolish. Buy the Turbo or the 4S.

As far as the range - very pleased to see 350+ miles.

Edmunds uses a completely nonsensical range test. Their results are notoriously horrible and inaccurate. Completely useless and, frankly, they should be ashamed to publish it.

very interesting...they bought the cheapest model, and optioned it up with nonsense... could have easily gotten the 4S and some sensible options, and stayed under 100k

Which is exactly what I did with my 4S order! Was a bit under USD $100,000.

and that is not to demean anyone who did the same...but he was shaming the car for being slow... which crazy when you knowing bought the slowest model

honestly Porsche deserves this - underpowered EVs are pointless and unnecessary - Porsches formula of infinitely dividing trim levels into 765 discreet sub trims doesn’t show the product very well for an EV drive train - another example of Porsche not adapting to new realities

3 trim levels - still a lot of options

Good
Better
Best

Macan Base RWD
Macan 4S AWD
Macan Turbo AWD

maybe Macan Turbo GT/SE extra high profit performance luxury

done - and avoid sh*t reviews like this and each of the trim levels would be distinct enough to matter

4S @ 4 price point would be great value and still make Porsche plenty of money/margin

they are just being clueless

EV purchasing at this stage needs to be clear simple and good value - porsches model line up approach only works for a mature market where the differences are valued by a highly informed customer - not the current state of ev’ness
