it's still unclear to me as to the suitability of the Macan for off road usage - and if the battery tray is more "dent proof" - given Porsche's history with the Taycan and truly minor damage to the battery tray - I'm not sure I'd risk getting a minor dent followed by a $72k repair bill to replace the battery…

Porsche has never mentioned/documented if the battery underbody is more resilient than the Taycan's design and if minor dents will be "tolerated" as part of normal wear or tear - or if they will be required to be repaired (at great cost) for the warranty to be honored.

Off roading a Macan is a potentially very very expensive hobby.

but I'm sure the Porsche newsroom picture would be awkward for Porsche should it ever come up.

I'll let someone else go first in this space…

The Porsche Taycan's battery protection shield, which protects the battery and cooling structure from below, is made of steel.
On the Macan, a lightweight but tough glass fibre composite underbody guard protects the high-voltage battery against physical damage from below.

Per AI, while the exact number for the specific strength of fiberglass varies depending on the specific composite, a good average is about 1,307 kN m/kg. For comparison, stainless steel's specific strength is 63.1, and titanium is 260. That's a massive difference in favor of fiberglass.

As an off road enthusiast, rocks can dent metal and you move on, thiner steel and aluminum dent easier. There is a weight penalty for thicker steel. Even well made fiberglass/composite/plastic has a tendency to shatter or break apart, however. Then you have zero protection.

For sticks, stones, gravel, sand, snow type surfaces it doesn't mater as much. Composites are usually lighter and a better compromise for the street. I don't see a Macan owner wanting to take a chance at scratched paint and body dents you usually get trail riding.

Life is full of compromise.

This is kind of off road - ice road on a lake in rural Eastern Finland. Temperature -15C. Stopping on ice was not allowed, but I just had to make a stop for a photo.
