I have a Macan 4 with RWS and can’t figure out how it works when backing up. Opposite the front wheels like at low speed in drive? Anyone know?

Thanks!

for the first couple weeks, i noticed that my parking would be really crooked, especially when backing into a parking spot. i think the RWS was definitely the culprit -- at low speeds, it amplifies even the slightest adjustment on the steering wheel. definitely a bit of a learning curve (at least for me), but i've been really happy with it so far!

Have it and it never occurred to me as I’m probably used to it from the iX. However it is very aggressive when going from a standstill into a street at 90 degrees and accelerating aggressive to beat upcoming traffic it really throws the back and is really fun.

Yes, the 90° cornering with acceleration is incredible. I haven't noticed anything specific with backing up.

Another weird thing for me is that when I’ve turned my front wheels at the maximum, it doesn’t appear that the rear wheels have turned at all. Even though my purchase order indicates RWS and I paid for it. Could this be a software problem or could Porsche have mistakenly built the car without it? Is there another way to verify that I actually have it?

At low speed (e.g. parking) the rear wheels will turn in the opposite direction when moving from the front ones BUT only by around 5 degrees and so you won't necessarily see this from the driver's seat.

In your park assist when the display is active you will see the graphic alter (at least if does this on the Taycan) showing which way the wheels are pointing.

At normal driving speeds the wheels turn in the same direction (1 degree or so max).

Blink and you'll miss it and not really a must have option on the Macan (car is already small and easy to manoeuvre) IMHO.

yeah, there's a article somewhere on porsche's site showing how the RWS steering works..or it may be in my other thread on here about RWS.

It works. lookin through the side view mirrors, i can see my wheels turn

i do agree with you that it makes parking a il more difficult. It may just be getting used to the exaggerated inputs.. but between the various cameras and parking assists, you should be good.

Ironic given one of the main reasons for RAS i to aid low speed manoeuvring especially parking!

I have it on my Taycan and have no issue parking in tight parallel slots at all but not 100% convinced that RAS makes a huge difference for this use case as I have only 60 cm front and similar at the rear to manoeuvre.

That said its worth having.

Out of curiosity, do you consider the Taycan small as well?
No - same as Panamera ST really which I've also owned.

Macan is smaller dimensionally and in wheelbase.

I have a Macan too and used to both.

Macan is smaller dimensionally and in wheelbase.

The official specs are (length / wheelbase in inches):
- Macan Electric: 188.3 / 113.9
- Panamera: 198.9 / 116.1
- Taycan: 195.4 / 114.2

Length-wise, the Macan is quite a bit shorter than the Panamera, with the Taycan almost in between the two.

Looking at the wheelbase however, the Taycan and Macan have pretty much the same wheelbase: we're talking 3/4 of a cm difference. And my experience is the wheelbase is what matters in terms of agility, not the length of the car.

Saying the Macan is a small car but the Taycan is a large car is factually incorrect when it comes to wheelbase. The RWS benefits (or lack thereof) will be the same for both cars - not kinda useless on the Macan but helpful on the Taycan.

Some people on this forum keep repeating this about the Macan but the numbers tell a different story. No?

I'd go as far as saying RWS may be the most important option to spec on the Macan EV, unless you do zero city driving, parking, or highway driving 😀 Obviously the Macan is not a small car, even in the US where car sizes are out of control.

The Macan is between a compact and large SUV, similar in wheelbase and size to several popular midsized SUVs. If your POV is a Chevy Suburban then the Macan is small, from a Jeep renegade POV it is large. I think just right.

The Macan Electric feels big because of width - nearly identical to the Taycan (similar battery pack):
  • Macan GTS ICE Width: 82.6", 75.9" with mirrors folded
  • Macan Electric Width: 84.7", 76.3" with mirrors folded
  • Taycan Turbo S Width: 84.4", 77.4" with mirrors folded
Also, the Macan Electric Rear-Axle Steering is more aggressive than the Taycan:
  • Macan Rear-Axle Steering: up to 5 degrees
  • Taycan Rear-Axle Steering: up to 2.8 degrees
The rear-axle steering in the Macan Electric makes a significant difference in U-turns and other low-speed maneuvers.

We own and love both the 2024 Macan Electric Turbo and the 2020 Taycan Turbo S. They are both wonderful to drive and the Taycan Turbo S reminds you every time who is Queen of the garage.
